Mack ClearTech™ Emissions Control Technology for EPA2010 Sets New Standard for Industry at World of Concrete

Mack Trucks, Inc. has always been a tough act to follow. At this year’s World of Concrete in Las Vegas, the Bulldog is the leader of the pack again as Mack displays production trucks equipped with ClearTech™, the world’s cleanest diesel emissions control system.
ClearTech uses proven selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to near-zero, while at the same time improving fuel economy by up to 5% and reducing active regenerations of the diesel particulate filter. Mack has been building trucks equipped with ClearTech on its production line since November 2009, months ahead of the new federal emissions requirements.
MACK® Granite™ concrete mixers equipped with ClearTech SCR systems will be on display at the Mack exhibit inside the World of Concrete exhibit hall, as well as part of the Mack “Driving Skills Safety Challenge” outside the show hall. Competitors in the Challenge will be able to drive the ClearTech-equipped Granite models. Like all MACK models, these Granites and their MACK® MP Series diesel engines were assembled in the U.S.
"Mack's ClearTech does it all -- and does it better than other systems which aren't even available yet," said David McKenna, Mack’s director of powertrain sales and marketing. “It reduces NOx emissions to extremely minute levels, while effectively eliminating DPF active regens. That means better fuel efficiency and reduced operating costs.”
“This is what hard-working truck operators and fleet managers have been looking for,” McKenna said. “More productivity, lower costs, proven reliability and even better fuel economy delivered through Mack’s MP Series diesel engines and ClearTech. And we don’t need stockpiled emissions credits to accomplish this, either.”
Mack tested ClearTech in North America customer fleets for more than two years, accumulating 5 million miles of field testing. Beyond that, the ClearTech SCR technology has billions of miles of real-world experience in other markets.
ClearTech works by injecting Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the engine’s exhaust stream. DEF is a non-toxic solution composed mostly of ultrapure water, plus a smaller amount of urea, a common nitrogen-containing compound. DEF works with the hot exhaust and a catalyst to convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor - two harmless and natural components of the air we breathe.
“We were careful to create a system that is beneficial in other ways,” McKenna said. “ClearTech doesn't change the design or operation of Mack’s great MP Series engines, and we’ve actually been able to increase horsepower ratings. Plus the improved fuel economy shrinks the trucks’ carbon footprint, reduces operating costs and cuts the need for imported oil.”
“SCR technology is transparent to the operator. Other than topping off the DEF tank every 2-3 refuels, ClearTech takes care of itself,” McKenna said.
The Mack Granite Series is known for power and durability on the harshest jobsites. Now with ClearTech, Mack drivers will also have the most productive, clean and efficient vocational trucks on the market.
